Biblical Seven Species: Deuteronomy 8:8 and 8:1-10

We celebrate Ellen Miller Braun’s artistry as the gentle and graceful, yet boldly colorful, Biblical Seven Species weave a blessing of abundance before us. The beautiful bounty and harvest of G-d’s nature and blessings overflow.

Butterflies and hummingbirds share the biblical verses that support and express this piece with the fruits and grains “for which the Land was praised.”

Deuteronomy 8:8
“a Land of wheat, and barley, and grapes, and figs, and pomegranates; a Land of olive oil and honey.”

Look closely and you will see that tiny letters, – the words of Deuteronomy 8:1-10 – are inscribed in micro calligraphy, creating each one of the large letters which form the words of verse 8 that frame this exquisite design. These words [Deut 8:1-10] are inscribed so small, they almost blend together creating a rich, inviting glow.

This chapter of Deuteronomy clearly states that acceptance and performance of ALL the Torah’s commandments is imperative for life, and possession and retention of the Land, with the promised blessings – both physical and spiritual.

May we merit these blessings.

I wish to share with you my deep gratitude to HaShem, G-d, for the gift of this artwork: Biblical Seven Species.

I extend heartfelt thanks to Rabbi Dov Oron of Karnei Shomron, whose classes in Jewish law I have attended for many years. At the height of Covid 19 in Israel, the Rabbi’s classes switched to zoom.

I did not have zoom at the time, so further thanks go to my friend and neighbor, Michal, whose thoughtful persistence kept me connected each week by phone. The connection was auditory only. As I sat weekly, listening to the class emanating from my phone, I stayed focused with doodling! The original pencil drawing of Biblical Seven Species is the result of some of this focused attention during these lessons in Jewish law. I refer to this piece as my “zoom doodle!”

This design exists because of, and thanks to, this “group effort” – and HaShem’s, G-d’s, kind, constant guidance. – Ellen
